No Sleep “STIMULATE”

EP review by Jonas

Bradenton post-hardcore band No Sleep released their EP STIMULATE one year ago today. To celebrate we look back at the bands second EP.

STIMULATE opens with "... Igniting Perfection" a song not only about love but about that love becoming an infatuation. I really enjoy love songs, this love song being backed by this kind of post-hardcore is jarring but also sick. It does make me want to start the nastiest hardcore band but then have all our songs just be cornball love songs.

Anyways the EP continues with "Dirty Dealings". This track has one of my favorite openings on the EP with crescendoing drums that feels like it could be the start of an electronic dance track. This track is describes removing a toxic person from your life. Shout out to the "Ctrl Alt Delete you out of my whole life" line.

"Energy" is exactly what the title describes.

"I can bring this soul back to life - and light the world"

There are two things I really get out of this track. On one hand it's a motivational track to "take the day". On the other it feels like when you know you have been in a slump for a while, and then one day you wake up on the right side of the bed and ask yourself "what the hell am I doing with my life? Todays the day I change everything".

The EP closes with with "At Heart". A track about love and dedication, whatever or whoever is at the center of the track is making one a better person. On my first listens I thought that this could be about a partner or close friend. But on repeat listens I thought about how this track could even be about the music we create. While No Sleep have not played many(any?) shows yet they have this great dedication to creating the music they love. They do it for themselves just because it rips and it's fun and that really seems like the purest way to create anything.
